The Power of Finding Joy in the Work You Do
I’m writing to you from sunny Orlando, Florida where I got a 24-hour escape from Ohio’s cold. But more than that, I got to spend the morning with an amazing group of leaders at Corcentric's client conference, sharing my 5 C’s framework to help them let go of what’s no longer serving them... on the path to Adapt & Thrive.
(If you were there... welcome to our community! And thank you!)
At the end of the presentation, I shared something I’ve never shared from the stage—although it’s from the opening story in my book.
Fifteen years ago, I wrote four simple words on my whiteboard:
🖊️ Work I believe in.
That simple phrase changed everything for me.
Back then, I had a successful business. I was doing well. But when I thought about the fact that one day I’d have to explain “what I do” to my son, it didn’t sit well with me.
There was no problem with the work itself. It was the fact that I wasn’t doing the work I knew I was capable of.
So I made a decision. No big plan. No perfect strategy. Just a commitment: I would pursue work I believed in.
I didn’t know what that meant at the time, but step by step, one foot in front of the other, that decision led me to where I am today—standing on a stage, speaking to leaders, writing books, and helping people navigate change.
Today, when I get home, I can look my son in the eye and tell him about this great group of people I met today, and tell him I did “work I believe in.”
That’s my story. Now let’s turn to you.
Are you doing work you believe in? Work that brings you joy?
That doesn’t mean you have to like everything about what you do, by the way. There are parts of my work, even now, that I don’t love. But can you find something you love about your work?
Research from the ADP Research Institute shows that if you can spend even a portion of your time on something you love each day, you are 3.9 times more likely to be highly resilient.
So let’s make this practical:
⚠️ THIS ENDS NOW ⚠️
Identify one habit, belief, or behavior that’s no longer serving you—and let it go.
STOP letting the undesirable parts of your work ruin your whole day or zap all your energy.
📌 The frustration.
📌 The bureaucracy.
📌 The stress.
Yes, those things exist. But they don’t have to define your experience.
🌟 THIS MOMENT MATTERS 🌟
One simple, actionable step to take to create a ripple effect of change in your life
START finding the joy in the moments that do light you up.
✅ The conversation that energized you.
✅ The small win that made you smile.
✅ The part of your job that reminds you why you started in the first place.
It doesn’t have to be big. Just one thing.
