He said "get a kick-ass partner" and she said... YES!!!

In Max McKeown's book, Adaptability: The Art of Winning in an Age of Uncertainty, he outlines 17 powerful rules of high adaptability.

Rule #11: "Get a kick-ass partner."

Well, my friends, I got one... and last Friday night, I asked her to marry me.

Even better, she said YES!!!

As I was preparing to leave Nashville last year, I had one final session with my therapist, Jonathan. His parting wish was for me to find community in Ohio.

In his words, "You're better equipped than most to go solo, but it doesn't mean you should."

Now, he wasn't talking specifically about marriage—so for those of you who are intentionally single, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Jonathan just knew that my nature was to retreat into solitude and to attempt to face life on my own. It's what I had done for years.

When I began focusing on "Mastering the Moments" almost 13 years ago, one of the key ideas was that in any given moment, I may be all I have to lean on. And so, I wanted to learn all the tools and skills I could to help me meet the moment.

This is self-reliance.

It's something I still teach, and it's powerful.

At the same time, its power is limited.

No one was made to face this human existence on their own. We need each other.

As Max writes in Adaptability, surrounding yourself with people who have diverse skills and talents increases your ability to adapt effectively.

I appreciate this now more than ever, and over the past year, I've significantly upgraded my community.

  • At work, I'm grateful to have people like Jan and Dawn on my business team, as they augment my abilities with strengths that I don't have.
  • In parenting, I'm grateful for educators who understand my neurodivergent son and are daily looking for ways to show up in the ways that support him.
  • With family, I'm grateful for my parents and my brother who show up to listen and advise with love and genuine concern for my happiness and wellbeing.
  • At home, I'm especially grateful for a truly kick-ass partner like Megan. She complements me and challenges me and cares for me in ways that are beyond anything I could have imagined.

And tomorrow, I'd like for you to "meet" her for yourself... on The Better Life Better Business Podcast!

That's right, I got her to sit down and join me in recording an episode! We talk more about the power of community, how we've learned—and are learning daily—to hold space for one another, our shared passion for cultivating resilience, and more.

I'm confident you'll come to love her and appreciate her as I do, and I hope this is just the first of many collaborations.

For today, though, I encourage you to just pause and reflect for a moment:

  1. Who are you grateful to have in your community right now?
  2. What would have the biggest impact on strengthening your community right now?
  3. What is one step you can take toward making that impact today? Just. one. step.

Together...

Up we go—

P.S. Be on the lookout for a "bonus" email this week to notify you when the new podcast episode is published.

Hello Reader, Nice to see you here in the ole inbox again. Thanks for checking in. I've got two mantras that I hope will inspire you today—one classic and one soon to be. Here's the classic: Don't give up. You've probably heard that a million times, but it's fresh on my mind because I just announced that I'm kicking off the Toastmasters International 100th Annual Convention this summer in Anaheim, CA! As I celebrate 25 years in the speaking business (this month!), it's a huge honor to join...

Hello, my friend, I hope this message finds you well as you juggle the inevitably busy moments in your life. Today, I want to share a thought that really hit home for me recently: "You won't find peace by chasing it. You'll find it when you create it." In other words, it's not something to pursue, but to practice. Moment by moment. Breath by breath. Choice by choice. In the past few weeks, my life has been jam-packed with events, deadlines, and to-dos. I'm betting you can relate. (I don't...

Hello, my friend, I'd like to share something about what I've been feeling lately, not because what I'm feeling should matter so much to you, but because I hope that in sharing what I'm feeling, perhaps I can bear witness to what you've felt yourself—whether recently or presently. I speak about navigating change and adapting and thriving in the midst of ever-changing circumstances, but I have a confession to make... I don't like change. I don't always do well with change. Change is hard for...
