Coconuts, lies, and letting go - lessons from the "monkey trap"

Published 2 months ago • 1 min read

Hey there,

I hope you're doing well and finding moments of joy as your week unfolds. Thanks for sharing part of it with me.

Have you heard of the monkey trap?

A chance conversation brought it back to my mind this week and I found it to be especially timely...

So much so that I'm talking about it on this week's episode of The Better Life Better Business Podcast:

The story of the monkey trap goes something like this: monkeys get trapped because they won't let go of the bait inside a hollowed-out coconut. They reach in for a banana or a handful of peanuts, and grasping their newfound treasure, they are trapped. They could easily escape if they just released their grip, but as long as they hold on to it, their hand will no longer fit through the hole.

Sounds simple, but it's profound, isn't it?

It got me thinking about the "treasures" we hold onto—those beliefs, fears, and little white lies that keep us stuck. Like the time my son tried to wiggle out of a tiny fib about his PE class, or when I clung to the belief that I wasn't cut out to lead a business. Spoiler: I was wrong.

Another spoiler:

Sometimes, the biggest thing holding us back is, well... us.

Listen to "Coconuts, Lies, and Letting Go" here.

Or, if reading's more your style, get the summary on my website.

Either way, I invite you to ponder what "treasures" you might be gripping too tightly, and consider what letting go could do for you.

Remember, letting go doesn't mean losing. sometimes, it's the way we find our true path forward.

Up we go—

P.S. If this message strikes a chord with you, why not share it with someone who might need to hear it too? Sometimes, a little nudge is all it takes to let go of what's been holding us back.

Hello Reader, Nice to see you here in the ole inbox again. Thanks for checking in. I've got two mantras that I hope will inspire you today—one classic and one soon to be. Here's the classic: Don't give up. You've probably heard that a million times, but it's fresh on my mind because I just announced that I'm kicking off the Toastmasters International 100th Annual Convention this summer in Anaheim, CA! As I celebrate 25 years in the speaking business (this month!), it's a huge honor to join...

Hello, my friend, I hope this message finds you well as you juggle the inevitably busy moments in your life. Today, I want to share a thought that really hit home for me recently: "You won't find peace by chasing it. You'll find it when you create it." In other words, it's not something to pursue, but to practice. Moment by moment. Breath by breath. Choice by choice. In the past few weeks, my life has been jam-packed with events, deadlines, and to-dos. I'm betting you can relate. (I don't...

Hello, my friend, I'd like to share something about what I've been feeling lately, not because what I'm feeling should matter so much to you, but because I hope that in sharing what I'm feeling, perhaps I can bear witness to what you've felt yourself—whether recently or presently. I speak about navigating change and adapting and thriving in the midst of ever-changing circumstances, but I have a confession to make... I don't like change. I don't always do well with change. Change is hard for...
